We enjoyed the park very much. It was interesting to explore the castle, see artifacts from the past, and hear stories around them.

All round amazing experience! I must admit I was sceptical about not buying tickets through the official palace website - but we had no issues what so ever! We were even 30mins late due to a public transport delay. They were very accommodating and it was no drama at all! I had read prior that the inside of the palace wasn't worth visiting but I completely disagree, we are on the final leg of our 6week Europe trip and have been inside many many castles, we agree that this was the best one so far! Both inside and out and we are glad we did both the park and the palace! 100% will be booking with headout again. Cannot recommend enough.

With The Ticket on the Phone I had direct access No need to go through the ticket office I recommend going straight to the entrance. The first walls do not have much to see All the others are worth doing (beware that one side is empty) Ae you can go early in the morning when it opens, there are few people there

When we arrived, there was a long queue so we got tickets online. It was very easy and fast. This way, we were able to enter the castle right away without having to do tedious queues. The castle is beautiful, there are many spots where you can see a beautiful view of the city. It was a hot day but inside there is a small bar under the plants, where you can have a drink or ice cream to cool off..

Buy your tickets online and skip the queue! Also scan the app once inside to get your free audio on your phone. The views from the Castel were amazing. Incredible fortress in its day. Plenty of room to move around the grounds

At the time of arrival, we were able to enter with our tickets with ease. We showed up 45 minutes early so we had to wait in a lineup of others who were also early. They control the amount if traffic entering in this way which was appreciated because it was very very busy. The gardens and the palace themselves are stunning. We waited about 30 minutes in line to see the initiation well, but it was so worth it. We both really enjoyed learning about the property and the man who built it via the interactive video and historical timelines that they have on display in one of the buildings

The design of the aquarium tours is very attractive and informative. The combination with the cable car rounds off this event nicely.

Top things to do in Lisbon

Visiting Quinta da Regaleira | The Palace of Monteiro

Quinta da Regaleira, is known for its mysterious elements and the beautiful mish-mash of architectural styles. It houses the mysterious Initiation Well and is filled with pagan and occult symbols. Read on to learn more about Quinta da Regaleira, how to book Quinta da Regaleira tickets, its opening hours, and other details to help you plan your visit.

Things to know before booking your Quinta Da Regaleira tickets

  • Quinta da Regaleira is one of Sintra’s most visited gems, and during summer, the onsite ticketing queues can get painfully long. To skip that extra wait, book your ticket online.
  • Even with a ticket, expect a short wait as everyone goes through a mandatory security check. Book the earliest slots to avoid the long queues that come with the afternoon crowd.
  • From June to September, Quinta often hits capacity. Book early to avoid disappointment, especially if you have fixed travel dates.
  • Standard Quinta tickets let you explore freely. Just pick a time slot and go! You can also enhance your visit with a hosted entry or audio guide.
  • Hosted entry includes ticketing assistance and a short 30-minute intro to the estate's highlights before you're set free to roam. Note that it’s not a guided tour, and your host won’t accompany you inside.
  • For a richer experience, opt for the guided tour. Quinta’s architecture is packed with mystic symbols and Masonic secrets, all easy to miss without context.
  • The Quinta + National Palace of Sintra combo is perfect if you’re in town for the day—they’re just a 15-minute walk apart!
  • This Pena Palace + Quinta da Regaleira combo covers Sintra’s two most in-demand attractions. They often sell out individually, so a combo is both smart and stress-free.
  • Coming from Lisbon? Book the Sintra day trip with transfers for a hassle-free experience. Choose a tour that includes tickets to Pena and Quinta to maximise your trip.
  • If you're on a budget, you can choose the option without entry tickets. But there's no guarantee you'll be able to buy tickets on the day of the tour if you change your mind, which, let’s be honest, is very likely once you see how stunning Quinta looks from the outside. That’s why it’s best to go for the option that includes tickets.
  • Pick the Sintra + Cabo da Roca + Cascais day trip with round-trip transfers from Lisbon to cover fairytale palaces and the dramatic Portuguese coastline in one unforgettable outing.
  • Day trips offer the widest language selection, including French, German, and Italian. But be careful when selecting—your guide will likely speak only the language you choose at checkout.

A real-life Gothic fairytale

Turrets, gargoyles, and moss-covered towers give the place a storybook charm with a dark twist. It feels like you’ve wandered into a fantasy film, only this time, you’re the main character.

Descend into a mystical well

The Initiation Well is more than just an Instagram hotspot. Its spiral staircase plunges underground into secret tunnels, giving off serious Indiana Jones vibes.

Every stone has a secret

Quinta is filled with cryptic details—Templar symbols, mysterious inscriptions, and alchemical codes. Every carving whispers a hidden story.

A jungle-like garden

The estate’s lush grounds are full of surprises: waterfalls, grottos, and winding underground paths. It's easy to lose your way—and that's the fun of it.

An underrated gem

Quinta is often overshadowed by the colorful Pena Palace, but those who visit call it the real highlight of Sintra. Its less crowded but just as stunning.

Is it worth the hype? Quinta da Regaleira reviews say yes!

The Quinta da Regaleira was the best sight we visited in Sinatra. Much better than the Pena Palace and much easier to get to, just a 10 minute walk from the center. Can easily spend 2 hours walking the grounds so if you you only have time for one do this one.

The tour came as advertised. It was well organized, people assembled at the location and were divided into groups by language. The tour guide gave out information at both sites ( could have added more while we were driving to the site). We had 90 minutes on our own at lunch time, which was good.

The outside is something of an artistic labyrinth. The architecture combines elements from the Renaissance, Neo-Manueline, Egyptian, Gothic, and Moorish styles. You will find tons of gargoyles, capitals, gothic turrets, an octagonal tower, and interesting motifs, adorning the palace exteriors and rendering a mystical appearance.

Intricate Interiors of Quinta da Regaleira

Intricate interiors

Exquisitely carved fireplaces, gorgeous wooden ceilings, elaborate inlaid mosaic flooring, and Venetian glass mosaics make up the interiors of the mansion. Even though the palace has five floors, you can only visit the top floor. Formal areas like the dining room, music room, billiards room, and living room are on the first floor.

Quinta da Regaleira Gardens

Regaleira gardens

Designed as a symbolic journey through nature, the landscape shifts from manicured terraces near the palace to dense, almost wild forest paths the deeper you go. You'll encounter mythological statues, arches, hidden stairways, and grottos that feel like portals to another world. It encourages you to wander, get a little lost, and stumble upon unexpected beauty.

Initiation Well of Quinta da Regaleira

Initiation Well

The most frequented location in the garden is an Initiation Well. Allegedly used for secretive Masonic rituals, the spiral staircase leads 90 feet down into the earth's interior. The well has nine platforms, which are compared to the nine circles of Hell, the nine regions of Purgatory, and the nine heavens that create Paradise in Dante's Divine Comedy.

Garden Tunnels in Quinta da Regaleira

Underground tunnels and passageways

A vast and mysterious network of underground tunnels connects major landmarks across the estate. Carved into the rock and sometimes reinforced with stone, these tunnels lead to dramatic exits like the twin-towered Portal of the Guardians, Initiation Well, Leda’s Grotto and Waterfall Lake.

Regaleira Chapel in Quinta da Regaleira

Regaleira Chapel

The Regaleira Chapel is located in front of the palace's main entrance. Its design is similar to the palace. Leda and Swan

Hidden beneath the palace, this cave holds a statue of Queen Leda and Zeus disguised as a swan, drawing from Greek mythology. It’s moody, symbolic, and accessible by a shadowy tunnel that leads out toward the gardens. The play of natural light gives it an almost spiritual glow.

Waterfall lake

Tucked near the western edge of the garden, this artificial lake features a cascading rock waterfall and stepping stones that cross beneath the surface. The lake is fed by a waterfall that flows over mossy rocks, and behind it lies a small grotto accessible from the tunnel network.
