Got the ticket with a guided tour because I wanted to have a deeper understanding of the site and I am so glad that Joao is such a fantastic guide! The meeting location was a vast space but he was able to spot us and approached us if we were looking for the tour. He was able to share interesting stories and details of the monastery's history and anything from the floor, walls, cloister and ceilings. Very knowledgeable and has a very pleasant personality! He also took very good photos for you!

A very informative tour with our guide Dee. She’s enthusiastic and knows Lisbon inside and out. It was a really enjoyable experience—no waiting and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Amazing history! The architecture was truly unique with the city backdrop all around. The fact that it is 1000 years old, and was occupied by many over that time period is truly special to the history! A once in a lifetime opportunity

It was mesmerizing. I shared the experience with my 23 year old granddaughter. Over the years I have visited the aquarium ever since its existence during the Expo. My granddaughter had researched places and things to do and see in Portugal and this was one of her top 10. She was not disappointed.

Did not have to wait in a line at all! The staff were very helpful and got us a wheelchair to rent for my mom who has limited mobility. Such a gorgeous piece of history and a must see for anyone who loves gothic architecture.

It is a beautiful location and worth the hike to get there. Give yourself at least 2hrs to tour it and make to wear comfy sneakers. You will want to stay longer

Why combine the POIs?

Dual contrast

Pena Palace brings colorful royal rooms, terraces, and ridge-top views, while Quinta da Regaleira adds symbolic gardens, tunnels, the chapel, and the Initiation Well. Together, the day feels varied rather than repetitive.

Smarter savings

A dedicated combo often costs less than buying both entries separately. It also helps secure access to 2 high-demand Sintra attractions before the most popular Pena Palace slots disappear.

Less planning

Pena Palace usually has stricter timed entry, while Quinta is easier to explore at your own pace. Booking them together reduces the risk of mismatched times or sold-out entries.

A fuller day

These 2 landmarks show different sides of Sintra in one outing: royal grandeur at Pena, then secretive, theatrical storytelling at Quinta da Regaleira, without turning the visit into a multi-stop marathon.

The best ways to explore both

AspectSeparate TicketsCombo Tours

Cost

Pena + Park about €20; Quinta about €15.

Ticket combo about €33, with 6% savings; Lisbon tours cost more, but include transport.

Availability

Pena interiors sell out fastest, and you manage 2 separate inventories.

One booking secures both together; guided trips also lock your transport.

Timeslots

You juggle Pena’s fixed slot and fit Quinta around it.

Combo booking simplifies the day; guided trips pre-build the sequence.

Convenience

Two purchases, two confirmations, and more route planning.

One reservation, less admin, and fewer timing mistakes.

Flexibility

Easier to change pace, add breaks, or swap order.

Ticket combos stay flexible; guided day trips are more structured.

Best for

Visitors staying in Sintra and shaping their own route.

Visitors wanting simpler booking, bundle savings, or Lisbon transfers.

Making the most of your experience

  • Plan the day: Give Pena Palace about 2–2.5 hours and Quinta da Regaleira about 2 hours. Add a lunch break in Sintra town and 15–30 minutes for the transfer downhill.
  • Choose upgrades: Headout’s lineup includes a self-guided combo, plus full-day tours from Lisbon with live guides, AC transfers, and options that include entry to both landmarks.
  • Know the highlights: Pena covers palace interiors, terraces, park, and Chalet of the Countess of Edla; Quinta adds the chapel, gardens, tunnels, towers, and Initiation Well.
  • Pena Palace: Palace visits typically run on timed entry, with standard hours around 9:30am–6:30pm. Build in the 30-minute walk from the park entrance to the palace itself.
  • Quinta da Regaleira: Quinta usually opens later, around 10am, and is easier to explore flexibly. The palace and chapel close before the gardens, so don’t save interiors for last.
  • Start with Pena Palace: It’s the stricter booking of the 2, and late arrivals can be refused. Quinta works better as your second stop because the visit flows more freely.
  • Best timing strategy: Book Pena early, take lunch in Sintra town, then do Quinta mid-afternoon. That sequence is easier on energy levels and usually feels less rushed.
  • Location context: Both attractions sit in Sintra’s UNESCO-listed hills west of Lisbon. Pena Palace is above the town on the ridge, while Quinta da Regaleira is closer to the historic center.
  • Pena Palace: Estrada da Pena, 2710-609 Sintra, Portugal | Find on Maps
  • Quinta da Regaleira: Rua Barbosa du Bocage 5, 2710-567 Sintra, Portugal | Find on Maps
  • Public transit: From Pena, Scotturb 434 brings you down toward central Sintra; from there, Quinta is about 15 minutes on foot or a short taxi or tuk-tuk ride. Ride-hailing between the 2 usually takes 10–15 minutes.
  • Walk: If you’re comfortable with hills, walking downhill from Pena through town to Quinta takes about 35–45 minutes.
  • Parking: Parking near Pena is very limited, and private vehicles aren’t allowed up to the monument. Town-center parking lots are the better option, with buses or taxis for the final stretch.
  • Pena Palace: Wheelchair and stroller access is available, and guide dogs are allowed. The hilltop setting still makes transport planning important.
  • Quinta da Regaleira: Ramps and elevators help with access, but tunnels, uneven paths, and historic surfaces can still be challenging in some areas.
  • Service animals: Guide dogs are welcome at both sites.
  • Important limitation: Headout’s Quinta da Regaleira Guided Tour is not wheelchair accessible, so the self-guided ticket or combo is usually the easier fit.
  • Lock Pena first: Build the day around your Pena slot, because it’s the harder booking to recover if you arrive late.
  • Use Sintra town as your break: It’s the most natural place between the 2 sites for lunch, coffee, or a short reset.
  • Save the well for later: At Quinta, do the palace first, then the Initiation Well once the biggest midday rush starts easing.
  • Pack light: Large backpacks, trolleys, drones, and tripods are restricted at Quinta, and private cars aren’t allowed up to Pena.
  • Pick your photo windows: Pena’s terraces work best earlier in the day, while Quinta’s tunnels and wells are often easier to shoot in softer afternoon light.
  • Respect the rules: Flash photography and tripods aren’t allowed inside Quinta da Regaleira, so plan for handheld photos.
  • Choose transport by weather: In heat or rain, skip the downhill walk and use bus 434 plus a taxi or tuk-tuk to save energy for the sites.

Frequently asked questions

You can book them separately, but the combo is simpler and usually cheaper. One checkout also reduces the risk of getting Pena entry and Quinta availability out of sync.
